These products permanently alter the natural texture of your hair. They give you the power to volumize, curl, wave and shape your hair without causing damage. Try the experience of a perm from home.
How to choose the right perm product?
Choosing a perm—whether for men or women—depends on your hair type. Different formulas are specifically designed for various hair types, including normal, colored, long and resistant, fine, and previously permed hair. Once you’ve found the perm that suits your hair, it’s important to carefully follow the instructions, especially regarding the processing time, which can vary depending on your hair type, for the best results.
In addition, depending on your perm type, you may encounter three different types of reducing agents. These agents break the disulfide bonds in the hair fiber and can be alkaline, mildly alkaline/buffered, or acidic. The main differences between these types lie in their ingredients, pH levels, and intensity on the hair. Unlike the other two, acidic reducers often require heat to activate the process.
Perms for color-treated hair
Perm products for colored hair are specifically chosen to protect the already fragile hair fibers that have been treated with color. Regular perms can further damage colored hair and cause the color to fade faster. However, perms for colored hair reduce these risks thanks to a carefully balanced blend of ingredients designed to be gentler and less aggressive.
Perms for thick, long hair
Thick and long hair can be harder to curl because it tends to be heavier and more resistant. That’s why the ingredients in perms for thick hair are stronger than those used for fine, delicate hair. These perms for thick, long hair are designed to penetrate the hair fiber deeply and require a slightly longer processing time to create lasting, well-defined curls. This ensures that thicker and longer strands hold the desired shape more effectively.
Perms for previously permed hair
If you’ve had a perm before, it’s essential to choose a perm designed for previously permed hair. These formulas are crafted to minimize additional damage to hair that’s already been through chemical processes. Gentler ingredients help preserve hair health and avoid creating rough, overly frizzy curls and waves.
Perms for fine hair
There are also perms specifically for fine hair. These perms create curls and waves without weighing the hair down and minimize potential damage. The chemicals in regular perms are too harsh for fine hair and can cause significant damage. In contrast, perms for fine hair use a gentler formula to avoid further weakening delicate strands. The processing time is generally shorter for fine hair compared to other hair types.
