Find the right flat iron for your hair type

Flat irons have become an essential tool for styling. Once used only for straightening, they can now be used to curl, wave, and add texture. Whether it’s ceramic, tourmaline, titanium, or steam, choosing the right flat iron depends on your hair type. Discover the perfect one for you!

Ceramic

Ceramic flat irons distribute gentle, even heat and heat up quickly, smoothing hair effectively in just one pass. This reduces damage, and the smooth surface releases negative ions, which reduce static and add shine. Ceramic flat irons come in three types: white, yellow, and black. White and yellow are great for all hair types, while black ceramic works especially well for frizzy or very curly hair.

Tourmaline

Tourmaline is a semi-precious stone with qualities similar to ceramic but even better. Usually, tourmaline flat irons are ceramic with a tourmaline coating, which may wear down faster. Tourmaline releases six times more negative ions and infrared heat than ceramic, keeping hair smooth, reducing frizz, and helping to retain moisture. It’s particularly suited for fine, damaged, or color-treated hair.

Titanium

Titanium is a lightweight metal that retains and distributes heat better than ceramic or tourmaline, offering a longer lifespan. Nano-titanium heats up even faster than regular titanium. These irons work well for all hair types, especially thick or stubborn hair, but they’re not ideal for fragile hair due to their higher heat levels.

Steam

Steam flat irons feature a water reservoir that releases steam during straightening. This technology helps preserve the hair’s natural moisture and reduces damage compared to other flat irons. Though more expensive, steam irons deliver longer-lasting results and are particularly effective for thick, curly, or frizzy hair. Steam flat irons work well for all hair types.

Expert advice

Flat irons can be tough on your hair, especially the ends. To avoid damage and breakage, it's essential to use a good before styling, and it’s best not to use flat irons every day.
